Barnum the Musical 2019

The Sabre Voice has an exciting announcement! The 2019 school musical is coming up soon! Rehearsals have began and they’re going great! We got a chance to have some one-on-one interviews with a few cast members and the director, and we would love to share our information with you.

Let’s start with the important information about the musical this year. South Meck will be putting on the musical “Barnum.” How fun! It will be performed here at South on March 21st-24th 2019. The first night, the 20th, is a student premier night, and tickets will be five dollars. On the 21st-24th, tickets will be ten dollars.

This musical is definitely different than cast members are used to. Garret Elder said “Barnum equals the circus and I was very excited to find out this was the musical.” This show is not a traditional high school musical for sure. One of the cast members said, “It’s a really different show. Even though it’s an old show, it has a lot of character and it’s really entertaining. It really is like a circus on stage.”

Everyone working on this musical is putting in a lot of work into making this a great show, and they would love for everyone to be able to come out and see this amazing musical. “This is going to be a really great show unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. This is a great musical to go to and you all should.” The cast members called this musical crazy, but it’s a good crazy for sure!

We also talked with these cast members about why they joined the musical. A lot of them joined because of the family that the members of the musical creates. “I’ve gotten to know a lot of people and we’re such a family now. Rehearsal is such a great place to go after school. Even though we have to do work, it’s nice to be in a place and not have to think about school stress.” And others said they joined because it looks good to have something like this on a resume. Everyone who is involved in the musical really enjoys it and would recommend doing it if you have an interest.

One of the cast members didn’t try out for the musical her freshman year because she was too afraid, so she did tech theater instead, She said, “After I saw what everyone was doing on stage I was like, I have to do this. So I auditioned the next year and made it.” So if anyone is looking into auditioning for the musical next year, don’t be afraid. It’s a great family and it’s totally worth it.

We also got the chance to interview the director, Mrs. Hall. We asked her how she picked the musical and she said that it was a hard process. She looks at how hard the music is, what space they have, how many members they assume they’ll have, how difficult the script is. Things like that. We also asked her how she picked parts after auditions. She said that she looked at the personality of the person and if they could portray the character well. She looks at attitude and attendance if you have been in a musical before or in one of her classes. She also looks at talent and if the person can handle the difficulty of the part. Picking rolls is a hard task, but i think she really picked well this year.

We are in for an amazing musical this year! I hope that a bunch of people can come, because everyone participating in this musical is putting in a lot of time and effort. Everyone is very excited and we can’t wait until March!
