PTSA Update for February 15, 2019

Do you wonder how your PTSA dues are spent ...Advocacy! This is truly one example where bigger is better. The more voices that are represented and heard result in a stronger PTA that can advocate for all our children and the importance of public education. The NC PTA has seven legislative priorities for the new year including: School funding, teachers and administrators pay, school safety (nurses and psychologists), mental health, juvenile justice and equity, "reimagining" school meals, and class size.

The NC PTA recently passed a resolution that:

  • Advocates that local school districts add school psychologists to school staff (to observe and address mental health issues and to serve as crisis counselors to create safer schools and more positive learning environments)

  • Supports NC House Bill 933 (allowing the State Board of Education to issue a psychologist license to Nationally Certified School Psychologists)

  • Advocates that the State Board of Education adopt policies that protect school communities from violent behavior

  • Advocates that the NC General Assembly fully fund school nurses at the national standard of (at least) one per school
