Growing up in Mexico City, graduating from Panamerican University with a degree in Pedagogy, Sandra Meyer knows how important reading is to learning, especially in her South Meck Spanish language classroom. But not just reading the Spanish textbooks, worksheets or current news articles. Sra. Meyer knows that reading a good book allows students to escape the general pressures of school, helping them to relax as they enter into a world outside of school via a good story.

During her past five years teaching, Sra. Meyer has purchased sets of books for her classroom as she recognizes many of her students cannot afford to buy a book or, when they go to the South Meck or public library, do not find many Spanish language books available. A $750 Foundation grant awarded Sra. Meyer and Media Resource Center staff, Ms. Lackey and Mr. Brookshire, allowed for the purchase of 60 Spanish language fiction books available for check-out to native language ESL students, novice Spanish students, and to AP World Language Magnet students! With titles such as Como Agua para Chocolate (Laura Esquivel), La Sombra del Viento (Carlos Ruiz Zafon), Las Luces de Septiembre (Carlos Ruiz Zafon) and Bendiceme Ultima (Rudolfo Anaya), students may now escape into a good story that encourages their love of reading and learning the Spanish language.

What an amazing way to strengthen your Spanish language and enjoy a good story! If you are interested in reading some of these new amazing books, come down to the library and check them out today!
